Capital Project - Admin/Food/Warehouse

Food Production / Warehouse / Administration Center 2020-2021

Early in the fall of 2020, RIMSD #41 Administration started the planning process for Rock Island High School updates and the possibility of relocating the district food production facility at the high school. After doing a survey and public (in person and virtual) forums to gather feedback from the community, district administration decided to look at other options and locations aside from the high school for the food production facility.

On Dec. 8, Superintendent Dr. Lawrence presented options and different locations of a possible Central Admin/Food Production and Warehouse facility to the Board of Education. On December 21, a Virtual Community Forum was held to gather feedback from staff, parents and community.

On December 22, the Board of Education voted to move forward with the planning of the project at a site on the corner of 20th Street and 7th Avenue, adjacent to the building that was formerly Central Jr. High/Lincoln School/Intermediate Academy. The $8.3 million project will include 18,000 square feet for administration offices, 11,000 square feet for warehouse space and 6,000 square feet for a production kitchen.

A site footprint of the facility was developed. School district representatives also met with City of Rock Island to discuss zoning and other variables. City Council approved the zoning on May 10, 2021.

After postponing construction due to supply issues, RIMSD was finally able to break ground on the project in March 2022! It is anticipated that the building will be ready to occupy in January 2023.
