Why is a Reading Revolution Important?
As we embark on our journey to create a Reading Revolution in our school district, we must consider the impact that not having basic reading and writing skills has on our scholars and our society. There is a high cost to illiteracy. Take a look at this infographic.

Reading Revolution Champions!
In her viral TedTalk, Rita Pierson implored those of us in the education field to be the champion every scholar needs. Ms. Pierson taught for 40 years and her TedTalk has over 15+ million views to date. If you aren’t one of the 15 million viewers here’s a link to the TedTalk “Every Kid Needs a Champion”.
Our district institute speaker, Dr. Lorraine Radice shared that her supervisor challenged her to start a book club (in the middle of the pandemic). “If you don’t do it, who will?” There are so many examples of the ways we can be Reading Revolution Champions. I have heard from many of you about how you are invigorating your scholars and staff to emphasize the importance of reading. The time is now - and if YOU don’t do it, who will?
This week - share the big and small reading victories in your classrooms and schools!

What are you reading?
Reading widely, consistently, and extensively has proven benefits in building background knowledge, vocabulary and word identification, reading comprehension, and overall academic success. Our scholars should be reading a variety of texts every day.
By reading widely, we not only enrich our minds but also enhance our ability to engage with and understand the world around us. As a busy professional it is often difficult for me to focus on sustained reading. I have taken the approach to take a few moments each day to randomly select a book and flip to an unread chapter. I am currently reading the “Harvard Business Review (HBR) Guide to Thinking Strategically”.
The chapter that I read from today focuses on how to execute strategy. What this chapter reinforced for me was the need to be clear about what the strategy is and what it takes to succeed - and to communicate it so that everyone in the organization understands what they should be doing. One strategy to increase our literacy performance in the district is for scholars to read widely, consistently, and extensively. My message to you today is that either as a teacher or someone who supports teaching you should be actively working to support scholars in wide reading.
Reach out to me to let me know how you are supporting scholars in wide reading!

Welcome Back!
Thank you for a wonderful first week of school. Your hard work and dedication is what makes our school district so special. Our district institute keynote speaker and author, Dr. Lorraine Radice challenged us to a few simple strategies to strengthen our approach to create a Culture of Reading. I have seen and spoken to many of you this week who have taken on the challenge to read-aloud to our scholars on the first day and week of school. Continue to share your excitement around our Reading Revolution! I will be cheering you on.
