Tonya Smith
Principal, Washington Junior High School, Rock Island, IL
Tonya Smith (she/her) started in the Rock Island Milan School District in 2017. She began her career as an impactful educator, teaching 2nd grade, and eventually moved into the administrator role. Mrs. Smith became the Dean of Students for Washington Junior High School (WJHS) in Rock Island. Mrs. Smith worked her way into the Assistant Principal role and became the interim Principal of WJHS. Mrs. Smith earned her way to become the Principal of WJHS.
Tonya, a passionate educator with 16 years of experience, stands by the message, “Every child deserves a champion.” Washington scholars recite a daily motto: “The Winning Warrior Ways: Be Responsible, Be Respectful, and Be Safe.” Washington’s mission is “To prepare all students for college, career, and life readiness.”
Tonya lives in Davenport, Iowa, with her husband and children. Tonya is passing on the torch to one of her daughters, who is a future educator.
