RIMSD Students Recognized at MLK Celebration


The celebration is held every year to honor the late Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Rock Island High School senior Jesse Thomas was awarded the M.L. Lockhart Scholarship ($3,000). 

Rock Island High School senior Alejandra Zetina won the Black Hawk College Commitment to Diversity Scholarship. The scholarship covers two years of education.
 
Rock Island Center for Math & Science student Stephany Kakozi and Rock Island High School student Zakiya Dade won the Youth Expression Contest. They got to share their poems at the ceremony. This year's theme was “The theme for this memorial service will be "Walk together, March forward."
 
Stephany's teacher, Ms. Lee says the honor is very much deserving, "Stephany comes to school daily prepared to learn and always looks to do her best. She pays close attention to classroom lessons and follows the lesson models. Stephany doesn't stop with wanting to be proficient. She always takes the opportunity to do the extra work to score an excellent. Dr. King would be proud of her academic and behavioral leadership skills. Stephany chose words from her heart to relay what Dr. King's quote "Walk Together, March Forward" means to her. She is an inspiration to those around her."
